Kultakuume tai oikeammin influenssa - Gold fever, or rather influenca

Kun tänään katselin YLE Areenasta uutisia, siellä kerrottiin Burkina Fason kultakuumeesta. Tuhannet ihmiset etsivät kultaa kirjaimellisesti kaivamalla maata. Täällä kultaa on myös, mutta kuumeesta ei ole tietoakaan. Kulta ei ole täällä lapiolla kaivettavissa, vaan sitä löytyy syvältä vuorten sisältä. Ja kuten Afrikassa, myös täällä kullan erottelu muusta aineksesta tarvitsee paljon energiaa ja vettä. Lisäksi prosessi saastuttaa rankasti ympäristöä.

When I was watching YLE News from Areena (areena.yle.fi) today, there was a story about the "Gold rush" of Burkina Faso. Thousands of people seach gold there literally with their shovels digging the ground. Here there is gold as well, but there is not any sign of "Gold rush". Gold is not possible to dig with shovel, it is hidden inside the mountains. And as well in Africa, the process of getting gold and other elements separated, needs tons of water and energy. As well the process contaminates the enviroment.

Kaivosyhtiö Yanacocha (ketsuan (engl. quechua) kielellä "musta järvi"), jonka omistaa neljä kansainvälistä sijoittajaa ja kaivosyhtiötä Perusta, Yhdysvalloista ja Ranskasta (http://www.infomine.com/minesite/minesite.asp?site=yanacocha); haluaa laajentaa toimintaansa Cajamarcan alueella. He havittelevat täältä muutamaakin aluetta, joista tähän mennessä surullisenkuuluisa on Conga-järven projekti.

The mining company Yanacocha (meaning ´black lake´ in quechua) that is owned by four international mining or investing companies from Peru, United States and France (http://www.infomine.com/minesite/minesite.asp?site=yanacocha), wants to expand their operation in Cajamarca region. They are after few regions here and the most sadly famous project is the project of the lake Conga.

Myös Chamisin yläkoulun seinästä löytyy viesti: Gonga no va! ("Gonga-projekti ei tule onnistumaan!") - As well in the wall of the secondary school of Chamis, there is a message: Conga no va! (" No way the Conga project will succeed!")

Täällä mielenosoitusten ja kannanoton kulttuuri on täysin toisenlainen kuin Suomessa. Voisin melkein sanoa, että päinvastainen. Olen elinaikanani osallistunut Irakin sodan vastaisiin mielenosoituksiin, katsonut uutisista Kiasman edustan tapahtumia ja makasiinien paloa ja kävellyt Pride-kulkueissa jne. Kuitenkaan en ole nähnyt kotimaassa sellaista vaikuttamisen tahtoa, jota näin täällä opettajienkin lakkomielenosoituksissa. Kultakaivosprojekti on täällä aidosti elämän ja kuoleman kysymys: kaivos veisi maanviljelijöiltä maat (halvalla) ja veden. Ilman vettä ei ole elämää.

Here the culture of manifestation and participating into social or political issues is very different than in Finland. I could say that it is the opposit. I have participated into manifestations againts the war in Iraq, watched in news how police circulated the manifestators in front of Kiasma building few years ago, walked in Pride parades, etc. But I have not seen in my home country this kind of will to influence, to participate, to make things different that I saw in the stike manifestations of teachers. The gold mine project is really a question of life in here: the mine would take the land (cheap) and water. Without water there is no life.

Olen koonnut tähän loppuun linkkejä materiaaliin, josta näkee hieman Suomen uutisia tarkemmin, miltä tilanne näytti täällä Cajamarcassa ja lähialueilla ennen poikkeustilan julistamista heinäkuussa. Sitä ennen kolme ihmistä oli jo kuollut poliisin ja mielenosoittajien välisissä yhteydenotoissa.

I have gathered here some links to material, that you may see little bit closer (than the Finnish news) how the situation was here in the Cajamarca and region before the government declared emergency state in June. Before that there was three persons that died in manifestations.

P.S. In the end of the video the woman with cap is asking from a policeman, why they are doing this to people. "Because you are dogs", policeman answers.
