Turistina kotikaupungissa - As a tourist in my new hometown

Kun on asunut kaupungissa kuukauden, on mielestäni sopiva aika tutustua paikan nähtävyyksiin.

When have been living a month in a city, I think that is proper to visit the local sights. And so I did, this saturday at noon I visited four important sights of Cajamarca: The ransom/captivity room of Atahualpa (El Cuarto del Rescrate), The cultural complez of Belen (El Complejo de Belén) as well the hospitals of women and men (el hospital de mujeres y hospital de hombres).

Tässä ensimmäinen oppaani ottamista pönötysturistikuvista, takana Cajamarcan ainoa säilynyt inka-aikainen talo El cuarto del Rescrate -  Here the first of many basic tourist photos that my guide wanted to take, behind me there is the only inca time building of Cajamarca: El cuarto del Rescrate.

- The mark is for the line where the hand of Atahualpa reached. Until there the room had to be filled first with gold and then twice with silver.

Inkojen rakennustaito on upeaa katsottavaa, heillä ei ollut käytössään laastia, vaan kivet hakattiin millintarkaksi palapeliksi. Myös oviaukot. - The builder skills of the incas are amazing, they didn´t use any plaster. The stones were cut precisely. Including the doorway.

Pepsodent-hymy ei oikein irronnut oppaan kehotuksesta huolimatta. - I really couldn´t do pepsodent smile there. Not as an European.

- The church of Belen is behind me, in the yard has been used as well for dance lessons and concerts.

Miesten sairaalan käytävä, kyseinen laitos oli aikoinaan ainoa koko Etelä-Amerikassa. - The hallway of the mens hospital. This hospital was once the only one in South America.

Makuusija, jossa peti oli tehty pingotetusta eläimen nahasta. Potilaan pää oli suunnattu kohti käytävän päässä olevaa alttaria, jotta potilas pystyi seuraamaan jumalanpalveluksia. - Place for the patient. The bed was made out of animal skin that was bended tight. Head of the patient was directed to the back wall of the hallway, where there is an altar. This way the patient could follow the religeous services.

Sinänsä lohduttava ajatus rakentajilta: ristinmuotoisen rakennuksen keskellä katossa on aukko, jota myöten menehtyneiden potilaiden sielu pääsi enkelten siivittämänä suoraan taivaaseen. - I like the idea that the builders have had here: in the center of the cross shaped hospital, there is a hole in the roof. Through there the soul of the passed away patients was able to rise to the sky, accompanied by four angels. Knowing what were the treatment possibilities in the 18th century, I believe this was very important for the hospital.

Sairaanhoitaja - Nurse

Näin tällaisen ikkuna-/tuuletus-/valaistusrakennelman myös Istanbulissa. Tämä sijaitsee miesten sairaalan keittiön katossa. - I saw a similar light /ventilation system in Istanbul. This photo is from the roof of the mens hospital.

Turisti Belenin kirkon ovien ulkopuolella. - A tourist outside of the curch doors of Belen.

Barokkityylinen sisäänkäynti naisten sairaalaan. - The baroque style entrance of the womens hospital.

Hedelmällinen yksityiskohta sisäänkäynnistä. - A fertile detail of the entrance.

Gaiua, paikalliset kangaspuut, joita käytetään seisaaltaan siten, että alinna oleva kangaspala on tekijän selän takana ja hän kiristää omalla painollaan lankoja. - Gaiua, the local way to produce fabric. It works like that, that the weaver has the piece of fabric (see the lowest part of the picture) behind her back and she tights the stings with her own body weight.

Tältä näyttää Gaiua-työ todellisuudessa. Huomaa oppaan heijastuminen lasista. - This is how the gaiua work looks like. Notice the reflection of the guide.

Viimeisimmässä kuvassa seisoskelen naisten sairaalan happihyppelypihalla. Tarina jatkuu seuraavalla kerralla, hasta la proxima!

In the last photo I´m standing in the inner yard of the womens hospital. The story continues next time, hasta la proxima!

Maassa maan tavalla 1 - Each country has their own specialities 1

When I have been living little bit more than a month in Peru and starting to get along with the peruvian lifestyle, this blog text is about the little and bit bigger notices that I have made.

Ensinnäkin tämä hora peruano, josta kuulin paljon puhuttavan. Elämänmeno on rauhallista, varsinkin maaseudulla.

The hora peruano has been coming more and more clear to me. The lifestyle is quite "tranquille", especially in the countryside. Things happen when they are ment to happen, and while waiting, you can chat with your company or like today at the opening of the kindergarden in Schicuana, eat corn together with others and listen the band or dance music from dj.

Paikallisia oppilaiden vanhempia odottamassa juhlan alkua 3-4 tuntia - Local parents of the students waiting that the fiesta starts (about 3-4 hours)
Myös eläinkunta tuntuu ottavan rauhallisesti. Vain koirat yltyvät puolustamaan omaa kotipihaansa joskus turhankin innokkaasti - parhaana apuna on silloin iso oksa, jota pidetään pään yläpuolella, jotta näyttäisi mahdollisimman isolta.

As well the animals are taking it easy. Exept the dogs sometimes start to defend their territory little bit too eager. The best idea is then to take a big brach of tree and hold it above your head. And try to look as big and scary as possible.

Kaikkien rentoutujien sankari - Hero of all the easy-going creatures

Jonkinlaista nyrkki-joogailua paikallisen lempieläimeni "burron" kanssa - Some kind of jooga (with hands little less relaxed) with my local favourite animal "burro"

Maasta ja ihmisistä löytyy uskomattomia värejä, enpäs ole ennen törmännyt luonnollisesti siniseen kiveen ainakaan suurissa määrin. Odottelen jo malttamattomana sateiden alkua, silloin tämä maa varmastikin kukoistaa vielä täysin eri tasolla.

The ground and the people are full of colours: never before have seen so much nature blue stone as on the way back to home from Schicuana today. I am anxiously waiting for the rain to start: can imagine that the level of colours is then totally different.

Maa on sininen ja punainen.. - Blue and red stone as neighbours
Maaseudun lastenvaatteiden väriloistoa - The rainbow of the children clothing in the countryside

There would be so much more to tell, and every day there are new wonders and things to think about, but now have to continue to see friends. Hasta la proxima  ( = until the next time)!

Opettajat kadulla

Tänään koitti päivä, jota olin odotellut ristiriitaisin tuntemuksin. Alkoi nimittäin maanlaajuinen opettajien lakko, johon liittyi mielenosoituksia eri puolella Perua. Opettajankokouksessamme meille kerrottiin Cajamarcan mielenosoituksesta, joka kokoontui klo 9 alkaen Casa del Maestros:in eli opettajajärjestö SUTEP:in toimistolla (paikallinen OAJ). Haluan tukea paikallisia kollegoita heidän vaatimuksissaan opettajien palkkojen ja työehtojen parantamiseksi. Täkäläiset opettajat ansaitsevat noin 1200 solea, joka on 400 noin euroa. Opettaja opiskelee viisi vuotta, kun taas vuoden opinnoilla poliisi ansaitsee enemmän. Kansallinen lakko liittyy lakiuudistukseen (Proyecto de Ley 1388/2012), joka tuo mukanaan muun muassa lisää valvontaa opettajien työhön (erilaisia evulointeja, jotka kuormittavat lisää itse opettajia).

Today was a day that I have been waiting with anxious. It was the first day for national strike of teachers. The beginning of strike as well included manifestation, as well in Cajamarca. In our teacher meeting we were told about this manifestation, that begun at 9 am this morning at the teacher assosiation (SUTEP) office, Casa del Maestros. I want to suport local kollegas in their claims for better salary and working conditions. Local teachers earn about 1200 soles in monts, which is about 400 euros. Teachers study for five years in university, when policeman that studies one year, earns more. This national stike concerns a new educational law (Proyecto de Ley 1388/2012) that includes for example more evaluation processes for teachers (meaning more workload for them).

Tapahtuma alkoi SUTEP:in toimistotalon auditoriossa muun muassaopettajien hymnin laulamisella sekä vahvoilla puheenvuoroilla. - The manifestation started in the auditorium of the SUTEP office building by singing the hymn of teachers and listening strong speeches

Oli sykähdyttävää nähdä, miten paljon opettajia oli liikkeellä. - It was delighting to see how many teachers there were.

Meidän koulualueemme Chamisin tunnus sekä kollegoja - The banderol of our school region Chamis with collegas holding it

Iskulauseita sekä tärkeimpiä syitä mielenosoitukseen, Schicuanan koulun johtaja toimi meidän osastomme äänenkannattajana. - Some punchlines for the manidestacion and reasons for the manifestasion. The director of Schicuana school was the main speaker (or shouter) for our departement.

- The ambience was concentrated, but calm and organized all the time in the manifestation.

- The precense of police force was regognised, and in the end of the manifestation there were more polices than teachers.

- Now when the state of emergency is over, the protesters of project Conga also joined in to the manidestation.

Etukäteen minua jännitti mielenosoituksen mahdollinen riistäytyminen mellakaksi, olen nähnyt ja lukenut paljon Conga-hankkeen vastaisista levottomuuksista. Niistä enemmän esimerkiksi: http://www.hs.fi/ulkomaat/Kultakaivosprojekti+aiheuttanut+rajuja+yhteenottoja+Perussa/a1305580362891
Tänään näin kuitenkin paljon oman alansa ammattilaisia puolustamassa organisoidusti ja hallitusti omia oikeuksiaan. Olin ylpeä saadessani olla mukana.

Forehand I was worried about the manifestation turning into a rival, I have seen and read lot of the violent manifestations concerning project Conga. More about this for example: http://congaeuropa.wordpress.com/category/english/
Today I saw after all professional people defending their rights in a organized and controlled manner. I was proud to participate.

The school and work life is reaching this every day, normal state. I have been able to visit two of the four schools that I´m teaching. I am mondays and wednesdays in secondary school of Chamis, every other Tuesday in primary school of Schicuana and every other in primary school of Chamis. Thursdays I am in secondary school of Cushunga and then fridays in the office of Warmayllu. I visited Schicuana school last thursday. The school has been renovated few years ago and it was shown as well in the teaching materials.

We will start a theatre project with other volunteers in Chamis secondary school. Then I will have the possibility to work with drama education for longer period. I am very glad to discuss and plan the project with other volunteers and workers of Warmayllu, they don´t necessary want any theatre play or bigger performance, and I can concentrate to work with the self confidence and expression of the students. I was afraid earlier tha I would become here as some performance machine, when I was asked to direct the little play in the first week for the sunday that week.

Namora on kylä noin 20 km Cajamarcan ulkopuolella. Matkalla pääsimme tutustumaan mitä ihmeellisimpiin luonnon ja inkakulttuuria edeltävien kulttuurien antimiin.

I have been getting know as well the surroundings of Cajamrca. Last saturday I was visiting Namora with peruvian and american collegas. Namora is a village about 20 kms out of Cajamarca. On the way we saw a lot of wonders of nature and as well pre-inca culture.
